Some ranges require you agree to provide tax stamps for membership or entrance. CYA for them. I'd find another place to shoot before I would agree.

For what its worth, ranges have a responsibility to make sure their patrons are adhering to the law. Not knowing the law is one thing but its hard to fault the guy for doing what he believes is right...even if he does sound like a meat head. Considering the recent changes I would think everyone here would understand that some facilities may not be completely up to speed on this matter. I'm sure some people will look at this situation as an opportunity for confrontation but I think the vast majority will take it for what it is...a minor inconvenience and a chance to educate.

Wouldn't surprise me either, lots of people are sore that they paid the money and went through the trouble to SBR while others just pushed the "easy button" and bought a brace. Just looking on some other rifle based forums the butthurt over this is crazy. Personally I see advantages to both routes and think people should just choose what works best for their situation and not belittle others for their decision.

I argued the point today with a range that im a member at, told them to google it!!!

If you pay attention, they actually kind of adress the lagality of it in the original letter, by saying "redisign". My range guy read the old letter, then the new letter and he admitted to me that that key word was what changed it. Someone at the ATF needs a dictionary, lol. As long as you don't "redisign" it, your good.

Even the ATF guy they ask ( I guess a customer or something) said it still wasn't legal, but I asked the range officer, " you think every cop knows every ordnance number? Or detail by heart? Every IRS agent, every tax code?" He said, "no", I said, " Then I bet your 'ATF' guy doesn't know everything, either". It got real quiet.... I went and shot my MCX.....

I think the canary to pay attention to is how many charges dealing with shouldered braces has atf filed? Zero to my knowledge! Now look at how many youtube videos and magazine articles feature video and pictures of people shouldering the brace? Tons of them! If atf thought they could win a case they would have already charged someone. They will not because they know they will loose and don't want that can of worms opened.

Contact the owner of the range and ask him to resolve this issue with his employee or show you in writing where he has authorized his employees to police his customers on behalf of the ATF.

His employee is not an ATF agent. You are required to show him nothing more than membership if you are a member, or a receipt for paying their range fees.

I thought about this after my range trip, having the guy gogle it and everything.

Maybe we should print out the ATF letterms with the date on it and carry it in our bags, just like an ATF stamp. Maybe even highlight the important areas.

They'd then have a hard time arguing it, and if they still do, tell them to learn their laws and to look it up, not in a mean way, though. Although I was getting ******, too, so I understand. I sounded like a lawyer when I was debating the guy. But being the only conservative when I hang with my fiance'S friends make me a good debater. LOL

Fortunately the guys at my range sell guns with the braces and keep on top of this. Frankly I am supprised...they tend to be pretty well educated on the subject of firearms and the laws in general.

I will chime in.
I am an RO, just the other day a shooter asked if he could shoot his sbr ( no stamp ).
He also said he had the new letter from the ATF.
I smiled an told him.:
1. I am not law enforcement.
2. Yes I am aware of letter.
3. My duty is saftey, not law enforcement.
4. If for some reason his gun is illegal, that is between him and the ATF.
5. Have fun and be safe.

Isn't the only way to really tell a SBR and a Pistol apart is by the serial number and which one it was registered under?

Some of these gun shop dorks are so self-important and really usually know so little. Don't they know what a turn-off they are and that's why people shy away from them?

You just haven't found the right shop yet. The shops I frequent the most have awesome staffs. Friendly, polite, knowledgeable without being condescending, and will admit when there is a subject that they know little about.

I'd like to think there are shops like this everywhere.
