I'm new to the AR world... I've been thinking about getting one for quite a while and I was hoping on some input for my decision.

Right now, I'm thinking about getting an M400 Enhanced FDE. The price point isn't that bad... I can pick one up at my LGS for $949. The main areas of concern that I have is the reliability of the gun. Is the Sig M400 a reliable rifle? I've heard some stories about Sig rifles not liking certain ammo etc. I don't want to be in the position of having a 5.56 rifle that won't feed or fire.

I understand that the 5.56 isn't the most lethal round out there; but, it will get the job done... So, bottom line, is the M400 a good reliable choice for a first AR?

Thanks for the comment! I think I might just end up stopping by and picking it up after work tomorrow.

Honestly, I had been thinking about getting a Ruger Mini 30 or Mini 14... I like the idea of the Mini 30 - larger round, more power, etc. But, the military mostly uses the 5.56 so it must not be too bad, right?

I did a search on 5.56 lethality... Talk about internet arguments.

I've only heard of and experienced issues with the Sig piston rifles (516, 716), and most of those experiences seem to be related to break-in or a few other things, which Sig has been great about taking care of whenever necessary. My personal experience was with my 516, which had a few failure to feed or eject when I first bought it, but these stopped within the first 120 rounds and I have had no problems since, with a variety of ammo brands and bullet weights.

I haven't heard any reports of problems with the 400 series, and I am still a firm believer in Sig quality overall, so I think the M400 would be a great choice.

The most lethal round is the one you can fire most accurately. After that there are a thousand factors.

They are a rock solid AR. Can't say I've read of anyone having function issues with a 400, odds are someone has but they must be very few. Buy it, you wont have any regrets. :salute2:

Dear Maxass, I'm looking to get my first AR also,I was pretty much set on getting a 516 until I called around my area and heard from a few gunshops that unless I was going to be in the woods for a long long time that the M400 would be a better fit, plus I was told that the quality control was better on the 400 that the 516, so I have decided that the 400 also in FDE is the gun for me.

good luck

Thanks for the thoughts, all.

I'll probably end up heading to the gun store tomorrow to take another look. After reading some reviews/and on the M4Carbine.net forums, I'm wondering if Colt is the way to go? I can't tell if that just comes from people believing that Colt is the only decent AR manufacturer out there, or if I'm missing something.

There is no doubt that Colt is a good go-to choice for quality 1911 handguns, revolvers, and AR-pattern rifles.

If you are thinking of grabbing a Ruger Mini-14, you could get the S&W M&P-15 Sport for about the same price or less.

My son has a Ruger Mini-14. He likes it but the available accessories are not as plentiful as the AR15 platform. I have the M400 Enhanced ODG and it has had no FTF or FTE's. Mine came with Magpul furniture so the only accessories so far are an EOTech sight, Magpul trigger guard and AFG. I considered the Colt LE6920 but found a better deal on the M400 and jumped on it. I have no regrets at all! It's a solid performer.

I went back to the gun store on my lunch break today and looked at a Colt, as well as a couple of other brands. The Coly 6920 that I looked at was almost $300 more than the Sig M400. Honestly, I couldn't tell a huge difference in quality between the two and the Sig felt more comfortable to me.

It looks like I'll be going back tonight with my two forms of ID to get the M400. I'd rather put the extra $300 that the Colt would cost towards ammo!

You need two forms of ID to buy a rifle? Jeez, living in Idaho is so easy! With my CWP, I can walk in with the cash required and walk out with a new rifle or handgun in about as much time as it takes to fill out the 4473!

I believe it's because it's an 'assault rifle'.

The requirements for that are a bit different... When I bought my last handgun, all I need was my CWP and DL. For this purchase I was told that I needed to bring along a voter registration card, my passport, or my birth certificate.

I've run countless rounds through my M400E. It has always shot perfectly smooth. Very accurate and has some great features out of the box. I compared it to the 6920 and decided on the Sig. The Colt is the platform that most AR's derive from. I just couldn't drink the Koolaide. The Sig was a little more solid with no "wobble" between the upper and lower. It was my deciding factor.

Have an Eotech EXPS and G33 magnifier on mine. Very expensive for sure ,but after getting it zeroed I'm putting everything in a 7 in target at 100yds. That's with 75 year old eyes by the way!

One thing to consider is what you want an optic for, I like to shoot multiple targets and the setup I have allows for quick freehand acquisition.
My son has a m400 with a fine scope and he is pretty much limited to precision shooting with a bench rest.

Congrats, hope it works well for you. I've owned my M400 Classic for over a year, never had a single issue thus far with any type of ammo.

I went out and shot it for the first time tonight... Ran about 60 rounds through it - I'm not quite used to the idea of forty cents for each pull of the trigger. The gun ran flawlessly. No issues at all, except for not fully seating the mag, or at least I don't think I was fully seating the mag.

I was shooting quite low, though.

All in all, I'm quite well pleased with my purchase.

You can always play golf. Balls are only $4.00 each....
That's actually a great idea, Snake. I used to reload my 12 gauge ammo, back in high school That's not something I've done in forever. I've actually never thought about reloading my rifle/handgun ammo. I'll need to do some looking into that.

And Harryra... I golf, too. Believe me, I hate the price of those dang balls.
