Ok.. I am a new AR owner and have some questions about my new gun and hopefully you guys can point me in the right direction. I have taken it out twice now and have issues each time.(second time was better)
The first trip out was with PMC .223 maybe 70 rounds and I had multiple jams and click no bangs. Upon inspection, no round was chambered. It's like the bolt just skipped across the next round in the pmag and left a drag mark across the top of the next round. I called sig they said clean and lube it so that's what I did.
Second trip, the gun was all lubed up and shot flawlessly 90 rounds until I tried a friends spikes tac metal mag and the same issues popped up. Gun would cycle, then click no bang and drag marks across the nest round in mag. The jams returned as well.. We used federal, Rem, and some reloads. For fun I tried wolf but it jamed every other shot. I know wolfs not good for AR's but my Fireds with me fed it with no issues so somethings up..
It's like its not grabbing the next round in the mag for some reason and when it does sometimes it's jammed at the feeding ramp with the bolt on the side of the round. What's up with the failures to feed? Would a zero fail BCG help?
Thanks bud.. We were out all day shooting off hewett station road. 308, 7mm's, p220's etc.. Great day for shooting but I felt a little silly when my new sig was the only AR having issues.. All help is welcomed...
Very strange indeed as my M400E has been solid as trusty 99 Bushmaster ES-2! I have used every conceivable mag from polymer to ancient aluminum mags (green followers).
I doubt BCG is the answer but possible. I wish I could help more, perhaps you have that exceedingly rare problem 400! Bets of luck!
@Davon It really must be a problem because It happened a lot and EVERY time with wolf. I know wolf sucks but it "should" feed it right? I wonder if I send it back to sig they will just run high quality ammo thru it with a pmag and call it good because that's when it does work.... instead of fixing the issue.
I want to know that if tshtf I can use other mags and ammo without a issue..ya know?
Ok... Here's some pics but I don't know if they will help ya. The gun must have a issue if some can feed anything thru theirs and have no issues but mine will FTF, jam, and not lock back on the last shot..
I just hate the thought of sending to sig and they get 60 rounds thru her and send it back. I can get 60 thru her also with hot rounds and a pmag(sometimes). the problems come when I try different clips and ammo.
abwnurse,
I'm thinking your mags are the problem. Being new they might be a little stiff getting seated. You may also need to take them apart and wipe them out.
I had a similar thing happen to me. Would fire, eject but didn't pick up next round. Pulled the mag out put it back in, same thing again. Checked it out and found that the mag wasn't fully seated. Felt like it was. Any how as mentioned in an other post "slam it home".
Hope this helps.
Are you inserting the loaded magazine with the bolt closed or open? If the bolt is closed when inserting a mag, the pressure from the first round up against the bottom of the bolt may be keeping your mag from fully seating.
Just got back from the desert and the sig m400 functioned flawlessly with 200 rounds of aguila .223 and pmags. So, I am going to say its a keeper and hope that it just needed to be broken in some.. I have a feeling AR's are like women... you just need to know how to make them happy..
I think I am going to add a fail zero BCG and a eotech and call it a day...
I use standard Federal in Pmags in my M400. So far 240 rounds and not one failure of any kind. IMHO, I'll spend a few extra bucks on good equipment and ammo knowing that it will function flawlessly when I need it the most. My life is worth it.
Same issue with my m400, I sorta figured it was the steel cased herters .223 rounds I had stored. Trying out some lake city 5.56 this weekend hopefully that will do it. I really had not considered the pmags as the issue but ...maby they need a bit more breaking in. Anyone out there used brownells mags?
I think it's the mag also. Although my m400 never had any problems with the pmag my friends ar was having issues feeding I let him use my mag and he had no problems. I took apart his mag wiped it down and slightly lubed his follower after that no problems yet.
I’ve been having the same issue with my new M400. FTF with various .223 and various mags. Also, the bolt does not lock open on the last round.
I tried an experiment. I got some federal 556 (m193) and shot a few mags flawlessly. I then started putting one 556 round in the mag and made sure the bolt locked open when fired. Then, I started putting one round of Winchester .223 in various mags and it failed to lock open the bolt. Every time, back and forth, 556 worked and .223 did not.
I’ve got about 500 rounds thru this and have cleaned it extensively.
My M400 does exactly as described above. It only seems to function 100% on 5.56 loads.
My solution, stock up on Federal XM193 and live happily ever after.
If I get to a point it annoys me I will have my local trusted gunsmith tune it up.
While I feel it SHOULD cycle basically any ammo I have come to accept it runs best on high octane fuel.
My m400 eats anything and everything. What your experiencing is definitely not normal. Why pay a gunsmith when sig will repair it under warranty. I believe if it's a warranty issue within the first year there is no cost, to you, to ship it.
The buffer springs in the m400 and 516 seem to be a bit heavy for some loads. These rifles are mil spec, they want 5.56 over .223( the 5.56being hotter) Some guys are replacing their btubes or cutting a .5 inch off to lighten them up with sucess.
