Sig 716 Failure To Feed/ Failure To Extract

I purchased a 716 first of November. This is my first AR style rifle. I'm still very new to the AR community. So forgive me if my terminology isn't exactly accurate. I've been searching forums for someone experiencing the same issue as mine, but I have been unsuccessful thus far.
During my first 20 rounds, I noticed after firing that another round would chamber but when I fired the "chambered" round, it wouldn't actually fire. Upon further investigation, I noticed that the bolt wasn't completely seated. So the firing pin wasn't making contact. I attempted the forward assist but was unsuccessful. I attempted to extract the round, but was still unsuccessful. It took excessive force to extract the round once it gets stuck.
This problem doesn't occur every time. But it doesn't occur at regular intervals though. I've got 60 rounds through it and it occurs at least every 4 rounds. I have various ammo brands in 308 and 7.62, and it doesn't seem to make a difference.
So I sent the gun to Sig for repair. I spoke with them last week an Andy said they "polished the feed ramp and test fired without malfunction." I'm no expert but I'm not convinced by that explanation that my gun is repaired.
Has anymore experienced this problem?
Would this be an issue that a "polish" would potentially resolve?

Received 716 back from Sig CS....two week turnaround.

They "polished the feed ramps and the chamber". "Test fired with American Eagle Ammo had no malfunctions."

I just went to range fired 200 rounds of Winchester 7.62x51 147gr and Magtech .308.....worked like a charm.....no FTF/FTE issues with the gun.

I will give it a thorough cleaning/lube then fire another 200 rounds just to make sure.

Good news story regarding end result.

@PITTSBURGH glad to hear the CS guys took care of the problem, knew they would.Any regrets now after you punched some holes in paper with that great rifle? I didnt think so, enjoy it, its a well put together unit and before the incident at SH they were very reasonably priced and IMO best bang for the buck in a piston AR 10 platform.:shoot:

Try greasing both the bolt carrier and walls of the receiver.

Three drops of oil where the cam and bolt meet.

Then add around three drops of oil on the exterior of the bolt carrier group.

Grease the interior of the buffer tube as well.

When the firearm's cycled, you should have a really smooth action with a "squishy" sound.

Run it wet for the next few hundred rounds.

My firearm runs wet with no issues - not sure if this'd apply to everyone, though.

Just sharing what I'm doing.

RANGE REPORT: Don't run CBC Magtech Ball M80 Ammo!

Went back to the range today for the third time with my new 716. Shot Ball M80 the first two times and had major issues. I did not do a thing with the gun since my problems yesterday, no cleaning and no oil. This time I brought PMC Bronze 308 and Armscore 308. Shot 20 rounds of each and it was like firing a completely different weapon. The cycling was like a Porsche instead of a Yugo. I was so excited I ran out of ammo fast and went to counter and purchased some Federal 762 and it ate that up like a hungry child. What an awesome weapon, now I am happy with the $4500 I have into this gun.
What I believe from my experience and research is that the 716 is built to very tight tolerances and indeed needs to be broken in. It is probably finicky with **** ammo in the beginning but once loosened up will eat anything well. Lets face it here, we did not buy this gun to eat anything easily with poor accuracy. We would have bought a AK47 for that....We wanted a accurate well built machine and I now believe that is what I now have. Ran the target out to the max (50yds) and my groupings were 2-2.5" and I really haven't played with the eotech HUD and magnifier yet. For you people out there who are frustrated with FTF and FTE issues try some high quality ammo before you send it back :)

I am now truly Happy Happy with this rifle.

You're dissing my favorite cheap ammunition!

It's worked pretty well on my SIG 716 from the get - go...

I really wonder what causes these inconsistencies.

so I have my sig 716 for about 5 months now, been using Federal ammo with out any problem (over 700 rounds), until i ran out of ammo. so i pick up some CBC 7.62x51 at the gun show. then i start to have failure to feed problem. then i set the piston setting to single shot mode (just to see how it work cause i have never tried that mode before) and the freaking shell case stuck in the chamber after the one shot, took me over an hr and can't even full the charging handle to extract the shell. i have to get home and use the screw driver to get the empty shell out. anyone else have any problem with CBC ammo, or any problem with the single shot mode on this sig716?

I have not try the adverse mode because my sig716 never have any FTF or any problem when i was using the Federal ammo. the problem only shows when i use CBC ammo, and with the CBC the first 20 round always smooth, then it start to have FTF every 5 or 6 round after that first 20 round. it is like when it hot it start to happen more often. have any one have any problem of fail to extract when using the single shot mode when use the CBC ammo. that is what really bother me.
what i mean as fail to extract when using the single shot mode is after the shot the shell casing got stuck in the chamber and I can't even pull the charging handle to extract the empty shell and i mean the bolt was able to grab on the shell but the shell was stuck in the chamber and have to be resolve with the help of a screw driver. ( i know i'm not suppose to do that but i was desperate at the moment :)

could it possible that by trying to save some brass that CBC ammo some how has a shell that is softer then spec, and after the shot, the shell expand too much that causing it harder to extract in the normal mode which in turn cause the FTF problem? my other guess is the chamber wall is not smooth enough, but by eye inspection it look ok to me

You need to clean your 716 BEFORE you fire the first time. They ship them with packing grease and if its a warm day like we have in AZ you might get away with not cleaning it but if you live somewhere like WI it won't work correctly no matter what ammo you use. You can feel the action loosen up as you clean it. Mine gobbles up Magtech M80 Ball like drinking water and thats without turning up the gas. Why dealers don't tell there customers about initial cleaning, I couldn't tell you. My dealer didn't have a clue about the cleaning and he owns a 716. I called Sig and this is what they told me. They also guaranteed it would shoot ANY factory ammo and so far it has. They don't recommend steel cased ammo. It does shoot it but you may have FTEs because the casing can get hung in the chamber. Clean it before you ship it back! If you still have a problem Sig will stand behind it unlike other manufacturers. (Hogan)

+1 and welcome to the forums.

A thorough cleaning and lube prior to the rifle's first outing is key to a successful break-in.

I swore up and down that I would never, ever shoot steel case through my 716, but the ammo situation as it is, I just ordered 500 rounds of Wolf 145 grn .308 Win Polyformance FMJ for $415 from Ammo Supply Warehouse. I'll be shooting it next Saturday. I'll let ya'll know how it performs.

By the way...what do you ride? 2007 Heritage here.

Sorry to here that about ABATE. As far as splitting lanes there's always that one ******* that thinks its a good idea to open his door! We seemed to get a little off the subject. Funny how Harley's have that affect. Glad your getting some ammo. Are you buying it from HSA? I've been saving ammo. I bought a crappy gun that had to be hand cycled after every shot. And I never shot a deer with my 716 but I killed one with my FXSTC! Crappy gun was NOT a Sig.

Guns and bikes...my favorite 2 subjects. Yah...got a little sidetracked lol. My apologies to the OP.

Using GunBot, I bought the ammo from Ammo Supply Warehouse. I think it was $0.82 p/rnd.

I haven't hunted yet with my 716 either. Not sure if I will this season. I'm looking to get a new Browning X-Bolt in 30-06. I'll take the 716 for sure as my backup. I've come close twice to wearing a dear with my Heritage. Both times I got very lucky...dear went the right way.

Went to the range this morning to try out my 716 Patrol. Took it out of the box, dropped some CLP on the bolt and fired 120 rds of Magtech .308 without any malfunction. Didn't have anymore time to shoot more but will bring it out tomorrow and hopefully won't be a problem

Took a ride out to the Griswold Hills Recreation Area, a nice 50 mile ride on twisty roads :) , to test out the Wolf 145 grn Polyformance .308 Steel Case ammo and the new DPMS 10rnd steel mags I bought a few days ago. My brothers went up in my younger brother's truck who hauled all our gear and I followed on my bike. The weather was fantastic...sunny and 80.

Good news and bad news. Good news is that my 716 ate the Wolf ammo like candy. I fired 50 rounds using my one-and-only PMag and didn't have a single malfunction and accuracy was very good. Range to target was 150 yards, farthest I could get out today, and had 2" to 2.50" three round groupings dead center. Now for the bad news. Two out of the three DPMS 10rnd mags I purchased would not feed...at all. Only one mag worked, somewhat. First 10 rounds fed, fired and ejected properly. After that it was spotty. Every third round or so would fail to feed. Just to be sure, I switched back to my trusty PMag and fired another 20 rounds with narry a hiccup. So, my recommendation...do not waste your money on the DPMS 10rnd Steel Mags, DPMS part #MA-3081, MAG-520 Mag LR-308 DPMS .308 Winchester 10 Round Factory Magazine Blued Steel.

Even with the snafu with the new mags, it was a good day :) .

Bummer! Are those by any chance 20rd mags with the hokey pop rivet in the side to make it 10rnds? My brother got a couple of those from DPMS that didn't work but I think he fixed them. Otherwise I would give them a call and see if they have a remedy. Glad to hear about the Wolf ammo. Don't think I will use any steel cased ammo unless I have too but it's good to know it shoots it! Did you have to turn up the gas or did it cycle fine on normal?

I was able to get my hand on some Federal Premium 7.62x51mm175 grain Sierra Matchking and holly cow, was able to put them all in a one inch group 100 yard away. I will never go back to CBC ammo again. I almost though something was wrong with my sig716 because i was not able to have a group less than 4 inch when i use CBC ammo.

anyone know a good charging handle upgrade for the sig716? I really like the BCM charging handle, but heard lots of people saying it doesn't work with sig716.

for muzzle brake, does anyone here use the "JP Enterprises Bennie Cooley TactiCal Muzzle Brake 5/8"-24 Thread AR-10, LR-308 .925" Outside Diameter Threaded End Steel Matte" I saw some really good review and very tempted to get one. I also heard that it really loud.

Yeah, I bought some TulAmmo 308 150gr to see if I could break in this rifle since it was having problems with FTF/FTE and scratching/denting some of the brass.

BIG MISTAKE!

That damn ammo jammed up so tight in my 716 that I thought I was never going to get that bolt to move! I had to take a blunt end of a 3/8 drive socket driver, place it on the outside of the bolt, and take another and hammer it back all the way shut. Then I had to take the gun apart, insert the screwdriver between the bolt, and pry it open!

I tried to fire this ammo multiple times until I gave up!

My theory on this is, those steel cases aren't as slick on the outside as brass, so it didn't matter how much gas I gave it, once it was fired and expanded, it wasn't going to eject those cases.

The tolerance on these Sig rifles I think are too tight making them picky with ammo.

Case and point.

Just to test the ammo, I handed a bunch to a range buddy and he fired the TulAmmo out of his HK and a FN SCAR flawlessly. Not one FTF/FTE!

So my testing is done. I've tried everything I can. It is going back to Sig for warranty work. This gun should be able to cycle any ammo I feed it.

Remember! The gas port hole in the barrel is at the 12 o'clock position so as to align with the Piston Gas Port to allow escaping gas to enter the Gas Valve. When you solvent clean the bore, be certain the barrel is on the table with the barrel's gas port facing up. If the gas port hole is at the bottom, the cleaning solvent will enter the gas valve cavity. If the solvent is not removed from the gas valve cavity, the solvent will dissolve the carbon as the weapon cycles and eventually the carbon will become sticky and prevent the Pushrod from cycling properly.
Remember, only a small amount of wet carbon blocking the hole in the Gas Valve Body (Pg. 82) and the barrel will cause binding of the Pushrod and of course, when the Pushrod "drags", cycling action decreases. Excessive oil, grease, and/or a piece of lint can block the gas port holes. I have never had to rotate the Gas Valve Body to help the weapon function. I keep it on the normal index. It only takes ten minutes to remove and clean the Gas Valve Body and Pushrod at the range. Dirty powder and restricted gas port holes will ruin your day. The gas system is the first place to inspect when you have a cycling problem.
