I contacted CMMG Technical Support about their .22lr complete uppers, asking if they are compatible with the SIG 516 Patrol Gen 2.
Their reply: "The best way to find out for sure would be to contact Sig Sauer and see if that model is Mil-Spec standard or not. If it is, there shouldn't be any problems using our uppers with their lower"
Not the response I thought to receive from an after-market manufacturer. I mean, they should know should they not?
Anyway, I was hoping someone here knows if the CMMG .22lr Complete Uppers are compatible with the SIG 516 Patrol Gen 2 lower?
I am aware of the less expensive conversion kits, but I do not want to go that route - just a personal preference.
Hi Quest, no I did not go ahead with a dedicated 22lr upper...yet.
At this point, still shooting the Swiss GP90 ammo and still not one single FTF, FTE and tight groups at 300m range.
I might get the 22lr Bolt Carrier Conversion Kit this season though. Because I train at a company every week with 9mm and next phase is professional course, where handgun and semi-auto rifle will be combined.
i was thinking about shooting the GP90 but was uncertain as the Stgw 90 uses a 1/10 twist and my 516 an 1/7, so the GP90 might have an impact on the barrel life.
maybe i should contact swiss arms and ask them what they recommend, as i have not been able to find a dealer that stocks ammo in 5.56x45.
by the way, is your rifle marked as .223 or 5.56x45?
i noticed that the german sigsauer website lists the SIG516 PATROL FDE as .223 rem while the US website lists the R516G2-16B-P-FDE as 5.56 NATO.
My barrel is marked/chambered 5.56.
While I did buy it locally, the dealer imported it from the US via Swiss Arms.
As for the barrel being worn out faster with GP90 is something I am not really concerned about. I think this subject is over-hyped. Shooting costs money, its an expensive hobby and I knew what I was getting myself into from the beginning.
Yes, I did read the thread about the conversion kit.
Personally, I will not shoot thousands of rounds 22lr in a weekly 2-hr training session. I am not a rambo-wannabe, which is not welcomed here anyway.
One of the main reasons for me choosing the SIG 516 is that it has a piston. So while the 22lr is far more dirty, after 2 hours, I will just run some 5.56 down range, clear out the grunge in the barrel, take out the piston and give it a good cleaning. So my assumption is that I should not have as much dirt in my SIG as opposed to someone with a direct impingement.
let's put it that way.
if you shoot 100 rounds during a training once a week, you will have to swap to the 5.56 about once a month.
this has nothing to do with rambo-wannabe.
No sorry...may have come across wrong. I know in the US many people will shoot a thousand or more rounds in just one day...it just reminds of the rambo movies where countless rounds of ammo are shot too. I think training should be constructive with tight groups and real life (urban scenario ****) like. I can carry thousands of 22lr rounds but not 5.56. And I would not want to be in a **** scenario with 22lr.
Any upper designed to work with a milspec lower will work with a 516 lower.
