Question P229 Legion vs. 365XL

Can anyone offer a recoil comparison for the 229 Legion and the 365XL? Also, would either be too much for an average-sized woman in an emergency home defense situation?

I have a 9mm p226 legion and a 9mm p365XL and neither one seems to have excessive recoil, if she has a proper grip. See if you can rent both for her to try first.

Welcome......P229 is all metal and a lot heavier and larger than the Polymer framed 365.......Recoil should not be an issue with the 229.........I have had 3...own 2 now....

Neither should be an issue, but expect less felt recoil from the heavier 229.

The best home defense weapon is one you can place your hands on first. Doesn't matter size or caliber. You are not going to be in the same spot all the time so get an action plan. If more than one gun available place in a safe spot that you can readily get to it. Shotgun, rifle, pistol. Learn to use them all if you have them. That is one thing drilled into our blood since we were little pups.

I would recommend the 365. Recoil is manageable if you are worried go with theXL. Although the extra weight would help with the recoil of the 229, another consideration is the ability to hold it on target for extended periods of time (maybe waiting for police to arrive) without becoming fatigued, something that is often overlooked

Just shot my new P229 last weekend along with a P365 and P320 Rx compact. The 229 definitely has less recoil but is a much bigger and heavier gun. I have an average size hand and it filled my grip. I think the P365, while having more recoil would fit her hand better. Like others said go to a range and try both.

I have both the P229 and P365 XL. As someone said above, the P229 is heavier (due to metal construction) so its recoil is noticeably lighter (with same ammo).

That said, my 61 year old wife, relatively new to shooting, has no trouble with either.

Contrary to the rest of these folks, if it’s only for home defense, I’d recommend the P229. It has a decocker, is hammer fired, and just seems to me it would be more manageable in a high stress situation.

Now if it’s for both carry AND home defense, the P365XL all day long.

To add: the DA trigger on the 229 may be tough to handle. I shoot with my wife and kids and they all have issues with the heavy pull on my DA guns. The 365 may be a better option simply due to the easier trigger.

If recoil is your main concern the 229 has less felt recoil.

True enough. I have both of the subject guns, and the 229 Legion is a lot more fun to shoot. Less recoil and more accurate. But the 365XL handles the recoil very well for what it is. A lot less snappy than any other micro 9mm I've shot.

I agree with many of the others. Go to a range that has both and see which one fits best for you intended shooter(s).

I have a P226 DA that I've found. I have a DA 45HK. The Legion is my grail tho. Thoughts on it vs XFive?

I own P365, 365XL and P229 LEGION RX.

Because the polymer grip of the XL tends to absorb some of the recoil making either 365XL or P229 relatively easy on recoil.

Therefore, I would think the first priority should be ability to grip the pistol comfortably and operate trigger and controls effectively. The DA first pull of the P229 is going to be a longer trigger reach.

For smaller hands I would think that would favor the P365XL.

But I totally agree with others suggesting she should if possible rent and try both before deciding.
