I am curious as to which P228 is more desirable? A Swiss surplus with PW Arms and Germany etched on the slide or a Sig imported P228 with West Germany or Germany on the slide.
Are they are one in the same except for markings?
I would think a collector would desire a Sig marked and imported P228 over a Swiss surplus.
All 228s were manufactured in Germany, but some of the Swiss police models were assembled in Switzerland and will have "Montage Suisse" etched on the side. Like US-assembled 228s, these lack German proof marks since they were not test-fired in Germany, but the Swiss guns may have the insignia of the whatever Canton the pistol served.
Some folks find Montage Suisse guns to be unique and interesting and will seek them out over German-assembled guns, and some collectors look for them so that they can have an example of every variant.
By and large though, the West German 228s with triple serial numbers and original box, manual, and test target fetch the highest prices. And if it's factory-original nickel...
Thanks for the info, mine does have German proof marks and three matching serial numbers as the insignia of a Canton. But I dislike the PW Arms on the slide.
But I guess it is what it is. I am just happy to have a P228.
I have several P228s and prefer the SIG imported West German and German guns. FWIW, I EDC OC a German P228. I have a few "Montage Suisse" guns and do find them unique and they do bring a premium to collectors.
I could see if someone is one is trying to collect one from each Canton they would pay more to acquire what they needed.
Mine has the Solothurn canton markings on it.
