I have both -- two green lasers and two Red Dots.

For HD, and that was your emphasis, I would go with the green laser. Let's look at a middle of the night situation.

Red dots, whether a reflex or holosight, you still have to generally get the muzzle of the gun on target and your eyes aligned to see it before you can use it effectively. Think of it this way -- first you have to find the red dot, and then you have to move the gun to bring the red dot on your target. This cannot be done shooting from the hip or any point of aim other than bringing the gun up to a full aim.

With the laser however, it is kind just the opposite. From any point of aim, all you have to do is point the gun in the general direction of your target and the laser will be visible to easily bring on the target. If the distances are within HD ranges (probably 15 feet or less), the laser is easy to control.

I agree completely.

Since the OP was asking about what was best for his particular vision problems, I think either one would work, with respect to his question about his eyesight.

But I do strongly believe in the benefits of lasers as another tool in the toolbox.

Green dot doesn't matter where ,as for which, Streamlight TLR-2HLG.Go to a gun shop that carries them and ask them to allow you to see it in action in the dark.If you go while their slow this shouldn't be a problem ,and try it in the dark.
There may also be you tube videos that can help with this.
I know you made no mention of a light as well but after having three I cant imagine being laser only for hd.
this light especially in strobe will completely disable the sight of someone prowling around your casa with eyes adjusted to low light conditions.Sound complicated ,not at all.easily operated with your off hand forefinger with out fumbling or letting go of your pistol. This can be done as you are bringing the firearm into position.Much safer than a gun in one hand and a flashlight in the other.Thieves strike mainly in the evening and late at night. Why would they do so?when most are certainly home?Darkness.
Make darkness your best friend and their worst enemy with this light/laser combo.
This isn't something you switch on and march around with. You switch it on only when you are ready and only you will capitalize on its illumination.
As for the shaking many are talking about, it's true ,it will be an indicator of how much we move and make you aware of it.
Question: do you move any less when using old iron sights or reflex red dot?No way in hell.
Lets say you've shined the perp and acquired your target but didn't get the shot off in time or it was a bad angle due to other family and or friends in your home downrange, another benefit is that little green dot on the center of mass is going to be quite persuasive to exit the premises to a person who is simply ducked around the corner and wondering if they'll be caught tonight.

Optics Planet was always $30-$40 cheaper than anywhere else.

Streamlight TLR-2 HL G Rail Mounted Flashlight with Green Laser 69265 50% OFF Free 2 Day Shipping

For now the gap in price appears to be 3 bucks..LOL.Optics planet is running 10% off until midnight 1/11/17.
But be sure to get the
TLR-2 HLG.
HLG stands for high lumens green.a tlr-2g is only 150 lumens ,the TLR-2 HLG is 800 lumens of retina scorching, sun tanning hell.Flip on strobe and you can walk him out with a banana, their not going to see for a while and when they do its just an intensely flashing orb every time they blink for 5
minutes at least.
How do I know?Self experimentation.Actually gave me a nifty headache as well.
GL and I tell you the truth IMHO.

Only you can see a red dot. Like tracers, visible lasers work both ways.

Many thanks to all who have offered their comments/suggestions. They have been quite provoking. I have decided on the Vortex Viper for a couple of reasons. I already have the Viridian C5L on a CZ P01 that I can move to the P226 if I decide that will work better for me. I do not see lights as being a problem for me as we have night lights in the house, a motion sensor light and we can turn on lights in every room from our bedroom. It is only my wife and I in the house and she has a G43 with a green laser on it.

I agree the green laser may be the better option for HD so may end up putting it on the P226 and the Viper on the P01. Thanks again to everyone.
