I really think the E2 single-piece grip is about the only one that would give you a better trigger reach than the stock grips but I don't believe they feel smaller (to me).
I've never tried aluminum grips.
The Hogue wood grips are pretty but you would be challenged to find anything thicker. I took them off all my SSE pistols.
I really like the feel of the G10s. As shown previously, they don't measure up that different in the region that impacts trigger reach the most, but the overall "feel" of the grips seem be a better fit to me.

I really like the G10 checkered over the original grips, I really didnt know what to expect with the G10s when I ordered them, but when I put them on my M11-A1, they definitely feel great. What i really liked was the fact that if the checkering was too much, you could sand it down it meet your particular needs.

I just shot my new 226 with the E2 grips yesterday and while I didn't measure the difference between those and standard Sig grips, I would estimate there's at least 1/4" difference if not more.

So both those dimensions affect trigger reach. I have personally found the trigger reach and overall feel of the grip much slimmer and much more normal/pleasant on an M11-A1 when switching to the Hogue G10's. The stock polymers feel strangely bloated. And I have relatively large hands, too. I would imagine someone with medium to smaller hands would find the switch to G10's (and E2's) a very welcome change.

Thanks for all the inputs...I'm late for closing this out.
I stumbled across a P229 with E2 grips in my LGS; after holding that one I immediately knew E2 was the answer. Bought a set and I'm in love with my M11A1 again. Not just thinner. but thinner in just the right spot. While I love the Hogue grips that came with my P229C, I'm seriously thinking about a set of E2 grips for that one as well.
