Recommendations on first gun

I just started shooting and am now looking to pick up a gun. I shot a Glock and a Sig mosquito. I liked how the Glock and Sig felt. The Glock is out because of the issues they have with the Gen 4 and the newer Gen 3s.

I thought about getting a .22 and a 9mm but I'm leaning toward getting one gun for now. I want a gun for plinking then HD. As time goes on, the HD will play a bigger role in the gun's purpose as I get better with it.

So is a brand new p229 with the .22 conversion kit a good first gun? Are there any problems with the .22 conversion kit? Thanks for your replies.

Welcome to the forum from Pennsylvania.

My recommendation would be to get dedicated calibers in a pistol. Some work great and others have had wear issues from using different slides on the same frame. It may be just fine but my money would be better saved/spent leaning toward two dedicated pistols.

Note: I view this as being different then changing calibers via a barrel change. At least the slide to frame movement remains the same.

I love my 229, it has been flawless since purchased and would make a great 9MM for just about anyone. You may find, though, that you could probably get a new 2022 and a new mosquito for the same price a new 229 if you look around.

Get two, keep them dedicated.

Thanks for the reply,

I loved the mosquito, it was a blast to shoot, but it did have it's problems. But it was a rental.

What is the consensus on the p220 classic .22? Or is it the p226/229 classic .22? I hear you can get kit to go to .45 or 9mm.

So then what's the difference between this and the p226/229 and getting the conversion kit for the 9mm?

The 220, 226 and 229 are all available as a .22 and can be up-converted to center fire. 220 up converts to 45 and the 226 and 229, I believe, upconvert to 9mm, .357 Sig, or 40S&W. From what I understand, this only applies to the newer frames on the 226 and 229.

In all of the above conversions, both the barrel and the slide are swapped out when changing from rimfire to centerfire. This is what I was refering to in my earlier post. I personally would keep the pistols dedicated rather than swap slides.

You can get a 226 or 229 classic in .22 and upconvert to 9mm later, if you like, or you can decide to get another whole pistol and not have to worry about swapping slides. The 226 or 229 would be in my opinion a better choice than the Mosquito for a .22.

I would just get a 9mm for both 9 makes a good plinking round just shoot Winchester white box its pretty cheap and works well and it will suffice for hd

then down the line you can buy a 22 if you still want one its always best to practice with the weapon and caliber that you plan to use for hd

Let me start out by saying that I am an avid fan of Sig Sauer firearms. I have a P229R in 9mm and I think it is a great all around gun. I also have a Mosquito. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed with my Mosquito. After doing some research, I found out I was not the only one experiencing issues. With that said, I would recommend the P229. As for the 22 conversion kit, I have no experience with them. For a 22 pistol, I always recommend the Ruger MkIII with the 5 1/2 inch bull barrel. It shoots very accurately and feeds just about any kind of 22 LR ammo. As for the Mosquito, if I want it to shoot without a reasonable amount of issues, I have to shoot CCI Mini-Mags, as recommended by Sig. Mini-Mags cost much more than your high velocity 22LR ammo that's on sale. Hope this helps...

P229 or P226

I would offer the idea of getting a 9mm Sig - either the P226 or P229.

Happy holidays!
