Gun Belt Widths

I tend to like wider belts, 1 3/4 inch or more for casual leather belts. I like the style and wider feel. I'm looking for a gun belt for conceal carry. I understand the 1 1/2 width is standard and often suggested as the belts are considerably stiffer.

Do any of you have thoughts?

Yes. Go to High Noon Holster's website. They can teach you all things related to belts and holsters.

FAQ section is your place. Bought a gun belt and 3 holsters from them over the years. Perfect quality and service.

I have one of the "www.abetterbeltusa.com" belts which I found on the Garrett Industries Website. Mine is 1.5" width but I checked on the "abetterbeltusa.com" website and they do have 1 3/4" widths. I have had no issues with mine and I have found it to be very comfortable and supporting when carrying and I generally carry IWB.

I have three different BIGFOOT gun belts. Two blacks and one brown. Steel insert between 2 layers of leather. Supports my P 229 in either inside or outside the waist holster all day long depending on how I dress.
Stiff but good. They only have 1 1/2" belts only. They are also a forum supporting vendor.

Okay.....just went and took a look at their webpage. Impressive gear. I'll be looking into one of their belts for certain. Thanks for mentioning them.

I don't believe that 1-" is standard at all as around half of the holsters I see are set up for that and the other half are set up for 1-3/4".

I prefer 1-3/4" and that's what I use, and strictly Wilderness belts which aren't leather at all, but are serious belts for the serious user.

My only advice is to pick one size and stick with it. Somehow my competition belts are all 1 3/4" and my every day carry belts are 1 1/2". Not sure how that happened but the last holster I ordered for competition use I goofed and ordered with 1 1/2" loops and it wouldn't fit on my competition belt. Fortunately for me I own a dremel tool so opening them up to 1 3/4" wasn't a huge deal. But still not sure how Or why I ended up with different belt widths for competition and carry.

Armour Belts (not Under Armour) makes a tough gun belt in 1-3/4". CrossBreed Holsters makes really good belts in 1-1/2", which is what I use. I don't think CrossBreed lists a 1-3/4" width, but they might make one. Both have very reasonable prices too.

If the 1 3/4" belt fits the belt loops on your pants and your holsters and you like it, go with it.

1 1/2" wide belts will fit more "non-formal" (suit) type pants than a 1 3/4" wide belt. Also, less of a tell that you are carrying.

Not all gun belts are the same, just because they call them "gun belt". Quality of leather, 2 or 3 ply, inserts of plastics or metals effect stiffness. Some of the inserts can be uncomfortable depending on the details of construction. Besides initial stiffness, inserts prolong the life of the belt. Leather gun belts do wear out. Mine also seem to shrink!!!

Gun belts are much stiffer and thicker than standard belts, 1 3/4 can be more of a challenge t get through the loops.

I love these belts, not leather but very durable. They use SCUBA webbing instead of the regular stuff. Pf you aren't familiar, SCUBA divers use a weight belt to counteract the buoyancy (makes them sink instead of float) with multiple pounds of lead weights they need to be pretty stiff. These belts are sewn of 2 layer with multiple passes and makes them very stiff. I have one I've been wearing everyday for 6 months and it has no sag at all. I like the quick disconnect buckle, but on a budget the regular one works well, just a little more cumbersome for bathroom breaks.

Well, as always just a simple question gets a treasure trove of informative replies!

Thanks guys. I think the 1 1/2 sounds like the most versatile to start with.

I have tried many so called gun belts. I have a closet full. After Shot this year I bought one from Bigfoot, best belt I have owned. I wear it daily, the rest just hang in the closet.....
