Slide catch spring problem on a 2022

Hey guys, on a brand new Sig 2022, the slide catch will not work. I don't hold my thumb on the lever, so I know that's not the problem, as well as the mags (good spring tension). and I had a gunsmith at the range look at it and he couldn't figure it out. I'm uploading a couple of pics to see if you guys notice anything. Does this spring look jacked up or bent? On the inside view, it doesn't show it good, but the spring actually wants to drift toward the inside of the gun. Thanks for any help-Sundaddy

What do you mean "won't work"? Does the slide not lock back on a empty mag?

Does it lock back when you manually rack the slide?

Take the slide off, put the takedown lever back in, insert an empty mag. You should see the lever lift.

When you insert the lever, the ramp needs to slide in under the spring.

Yeah, I meant "won't catch". It does seem bent down, and when I inserted the pin (without the slide) it looks like the pin hits the spring and pushes it in towards the center, away from the frame. I think the spring would have to be removed and tweaked, so that it has tension toward the frame.

When the lever is reinserted into the frame, the beveled surface of the rear pin should lift the spring, not push it inward. With no magazine inserted (it should be removed before stripping down the gun) you should then be able to press upward on the lever and have it return on its own to the downward position.

If you then insert an empty magazine into the frame (with no slide mounted) you should be able to see the mag follower press upward on the beveled pin, and the slide release lever should move upward. You should then be able to press down on the lever and see the mag follower move down with it, and when you release pressure the lever and the follower should move upward on their own.

If the above actions do not all occur, you probably have a problem with the slide release lever spring. If the actions occur up to the point of magazine insertion but then fail, you probably have a problem with the magazine.

With the slide off, see if you can get the ramp on the lever to slide under the spring. You can try a small jewelers screwdriver or even a toothpick.

With no mag in, the lever should be pushed down. If you push it up with your thumb and release, it should return to the lowered position.

Here's what mine looks like.

...what's the trick to popping the spring out? If i do something like that would it affect the warranty?
While I agree with the others that your spring looks to be bent slightly downward, that should not affect the functionality if the beveled portion of the pin goes under and lifts the spring, and if the lever is fully inserted back into the frame.

(We have heard from at least one person here on the forum who wasn't fully seating his lever after stripping and cleaning his SP2022.)

Hey guys, on a brand new Sig 2022, the slide catch will not work.
I took another look at your pictures, and on the "inside view" it definitely looks to me like the spring is bent inward, not just downward.

Replacing the spring should be an easy D-I-Y project, but since it's a brand new gun you might want to contact SIG. They'll probably ask you to send the whole gun to them, so you'd be without it for a week or two, but you'd get full factory warranty work, and it would come back to you better, I suspect, than one right off the assembly line. (More attention to detail.)

Looks like this is resolved already, but just something else to keep in mind:

This is actually not an uncommon problem with these pistols. When the slide stop is reinserted during assembly, it is supposed to be aligned so that the part that engages the spring goes under it. Unfortunately if it is not lined up, with enough force the stop can still be pushed in and that can potentially deform the spring.

I got mine jack-balled the first time I stripped it down to clean it. I think I intentionally forced the insert above the spring...thinking that it needed upward pressure on it to catch the slide. I still don't fully understand how it all works, but it for sure goes under the spring. I actually think that they lay the spring in there before pinning the Locking Insert in, 'cause it's a booger to finagle that thing through the opening.

If there were upward pressure on the slide catch it would hold the slide open after every shot. Instead, downward pressure keeps the slide from being held open unless a force stronger than the spring pushes it up; that can be the magazine follower when the last round has been fired, or manipulation by the shooter.

Bent SPRING = RUINED?

I have this same problem with a bent spring. I just bought my sp2022 yesterday and already have jacked her up. I read on these forums that being that the weapon is brand new that it would need some forcing in trying to get the pin back in place. Apparently upon doing this, I bent my spring pretty horribly. Please if anyone figured out a quick fix for this bent spring issue, I'd love to hear about it. The slide isn't locking to the rear once it's all put back together I have no clue what is wrong with her. I really am dreading shipping her to sig the day after I purchased. Is the warranty voided if its caused by user error?

Well, you could try using a small punch or needle nose and attempt to bend it up a bit. Don't need much, just enough for the ramp to slide under. Don't pull up too hand or you may damage the frame.

Topgun Supply has new ones in stock. You may need to remove the locking block to get it out. Don't forget a snapper sleeve.
