P220 in 9mm. Buy?

Went to LGS yesterday instead of going to my barber, closed. Saw a P220 used in 95% condition. made in Germany, assembled in Exeter. German proofs. Mid to late 80's manuf. probably. But it was a 9mm. Guy wants $550. and no box one orig. mag. Bluebook says $625 , but to DEDUCT 10% for European models in 9mm with bottom mag release. Why are these less desireable, just because of the bottom mag? Should I buy or wait for a German 226 which may cost me more possibly. and is it recommended to switch out the trigger bar spring, too?

Sounds like they are asking about what it's worth.

That bottom mag release design has to be the dumbest idea ever.

found out today, the SN / AB code is 2001. Mags are not manuf. anymore and at $60 a pop, makes me think twice. so puts me up to about $650 with adding another mag. Thinking about getting a p226 now with all the hassle this is getting to be.

Id vote to look for a 226 as well. You can still find really nice W. Germans out there at pretty good prices. Then you have 15+ rounds of 9mm compared to the 9+ rounds of the 220 in 9mm.

i have a p220 9mm that i have had for 26 years and have carried it in harms way many times without ever a malfunction, the thought process behind the bottom release is that when you empty the mag. that you take out the empty without dropping it to save for reloading, if you are running and gunning dropping mags along the way when you are out you are done, keeping the mags would allow you to reload in a extended firefight

I am in the same boat. I have found a W German 45auto (1985) JF proof marks with same s# for barrel, slide, frame and box. Comes w/ two mags. It also has euro bottom mag release. It looks great inside but has holster ware. They want $560.00 for it. There are a number of German- carbon steel slide police trade ins out w/ standard there for about the same money. I am looking to decide which would be the best gun to go with.

Be sure to check availability of mags for this. Regular 45 mags don't work on bottom release guns.

Thank you drgreg, If I could find a W German w/ standard mag release in great shape I would probably go that way. The Euro style mag is interesting and would be nice to own but not if there is a problem down the road with parts etc. I am still looking for info as I want to buy it right the first time.. then shoot it as much as possible. Any comments would be welcome.Chuck

Be careful what you wish for. They did make a run of P220s in 9mm with an American mag release. I believe it was only for one US agency though. It is now fairly difficult to find mags for this hand gun.

A gentleman that I shoot with has one. To find original Sig mags for it, he has paid upwards of $150 dollars per mag.

It is an awesome gun though, and neat to know that there are so few of that configuration.

gaprider0- I've heard that explanation of the euro mag release design and certainly don't discount the value of hanging on to your limited supply of mags in a threat environment. Seems to me that the mag release mounted on the grip side (US style?) gives you that option. Just because you can release the mag with only your shooting hand doesn't mean you have to leave it in the dirt. Seems better to have that options though should the situation warrant.
