Converting 229 from DAO to DA/SA?

Lately I've been seeing a lot of LEO used 229's showing up around and almost all of them are DAO. Some look like they have seen very lite use which I guess is not that unusual. Pricing has been great from $529 to $659.

What is the cost and the complexity of converting a 229 from DAO to DA/SA?

Is it a project for a DIY ? or is it a gunsmith job?

Below is the detailed explanation of the process. It was written by a member here Fjgiie [I hope he doesn't mind posting it here] when I asked the same questions. I got all the parts from Top Gun Supply [great service]. The most difficult part is to get the sear in, but with a little patience you can do it.

This is not difficult to do. There are only a couple of places in the disassembly and reassembly where you can get in trouble.

Rule #1 is Decock the Hammer before you do anything. The Locking insert will not come out of the pistol unless the Hammer is decocked. It will not go back in either.

Rule #2 is Bring the new Hammer in with the hammer strut pin under that tiny hammer reset spring. The saddle of the Hammer strut assembly goes under the Hammer strut pin, and the Hammer reset spring goes on top of the Hammer strut pin.

To get the conversion done here is what you need to do.
Clear the pistol and remove the Slide. DECOCK the Hammer. Remove the Grips.

Remove the Take down lever
This is done by pushing the Take down lever from the right side and turning the Take down lever counter clock-wise and pulling.
Lift out the Locking insert with the Slide catch lever spring, which is only attached with the bent end in the hole of the Locking insert.

Remove the Trigger bar spring with your fingers, first the end under the Trigger bar and then the frame end.

Using a tooth-pic push out the Trigger pivot pin. Notice that the left end of that pin has the slot in it. In the middle of that pin are two slots. When you put it back in the two slots go forward and down, with the left side slot horizontal. Lift the Slide catch lever out of the frame. The hole in it was for the Trigger pivot pin.

Getting to the fun part now.
Remove the Trigger bar with the Trigger attached. Sometimes you can just turn the pistol upside down and shake it out. Trigger end up and forward.

Remove the Mainspring assembly by pushing up on the Seat. Relax the Sear spring.

All that is left to do is push the Sear pin out and push the Hammer pivot pin out.

Clean the small parts and lube them.

First back in is the Decocking assembly. Bearing goes inside the frame.

The Hammer is brought up under the tiny Hammer reset spring and the Hammer pivot pin is installed. Next install the Mainspring assembly. If you have the new style with the black plastic seat then install the pieces one at a time.

Installing the parts on the Sear pin is not difficult, its just that the parts are small. The Sear pin comes in from the left and the ejector is the first to be installed, then the Sear with a Q-Tip stuck in the back of the Sear. Next Sear spring and then the Safety lever. You can now push the left end of the Sear spring under the Sear spring pin using a “V” shaped tool. Push the end of the spring to the right around the end of the Sear spring pin.

Place the Trigger on the Trigger bar and bring in from the top front. No forcing anything here. Just work the trigger bar into the frame. Start the Trigger pivot pin through the Trigger and replace the Slide catch lever so the Trigger pivot pin can retain it. Trigger bar spring with frame end in first. Insert the end as shallow as you can and then hook the other end under the Trigger bar in the notch provided.

Now back to the fun again. The Locking Insert

With the Slide catch lever against the left frame, the two middle slots of the Trigger pivot pin forward and down and slot in the left end of the pin horizontal and the Trigger pivot pin centered in the frame, the Locking insert with the Slide catch lever spring installed will drop right in. (if the Hammer is decocked)

The Take down lever is turned with the lever end up at 12:00. Push in and turn clockwise until the Locking insert clears the left frame. Then Place the lever at 12:00 again and turn this time counter clock-wise and push in. Stop with lever at 6:00.

You have the plane.

Please check very carefully before plunking down the cash. Are you sure these are DAO you are seeing? There are a lot of DAK's that have been turned in by LEO's on the used market these days. While I am a fan of the DAK trigger, the conversion from DAK to DA/SA is considerably more expensive than the conversion from DAO to DA/SA.

While either conversion, from DAO or DAK to DA/SA, is relatively easy to do, the cost differences can be substantial. I have purchased a LEO turn in P239 DAK and P229 DAK, both in 40 S&W. The DAK trigger is very appealing to me and will be keeping it installed. The ability to convert easily either gun for concealed carry to 9mm or 357 SIG is also great. Rather than converting the trigger, you may want to give the trigger a fair shake, you may be surprised how nice it actually is!
