My first Sig Sauer P226 Tacops 40 S&W

Was truly ecstatic to get my first Sig the other day. But was a bit disappointed how it was delivered. The firearm came in a cardboard box. No black plastic case as Sig's own web-site stated that all new guns would come delivered in. For a $1000.plus handgun one would expect at least some kind of carrying case. When I called Sig Sauer's customer service department about this, they said no more cases since March of this year (2012). I pointed out to them that their own web-site stated the following under Customer Service " FAQ's":

What are grips bands on SIG handguns?

NEW pistols will have a silver band with a black SIG SAUER logo, they are shipped in a black case. The previous firearms were shipped with a blue grip band and ship in a blue case. Certified Pre-Owned Pistols will have a red grip band and ship in a red case. As of Early 2010 we are moving towards changing from the blue case to black. New guns are now shipping in black cases. However you may still see blue cases at our dealers.

Their answer was still no case. The following day their web-site stated the following under the same heading as noted above:

NEW pistols will have a silver band with a black SIG SAUER logo, they are shipped in a black case. The previous firearms were shipped with a blue grip band and ship in a blue case. Certified Pre-Owned Pistols will have a red grip band and ship in a red case. As of Early March 2012 we started moving towards changing from the black plastic case to a cardboard and foam box on some models.

So much for good customer service for a new consumer of Sig Sauer firearms. Now I transport my P226 in my extra H&K case when ever I go to the range. It definitely creates conversation and spreads the gospel.

You'll only be able to shoot the case if it is the target! You can't holster it if it's in a case.

Manufacturers are always changing things, cases included. The early Sigs came in cardboard boxes and shoot just fine. Nice cases are a great feature but in all honesty mine don't ever live in their cases.

Yeah you would think that for the cost of a new Sig they could afford to give you a plastic case. All in all it doesn't make the gun shoot any better but....

As much money as Obama is printing (causing price inflation), we should all be happy that they aren't putting them in only a used plastic Wal-Mart bag.

My SIG's don't stay in the factory box... I have gun rugs for them. For me, its easier to transport, in a gun rug.

Have to admit that "cardboard box" does seem a stepdown for a quality brand; wonder if other mfrs will follow suit.

Having said that, my nice plastic boxes spend a quiet life in storage while my pistols are transported in gun rugs.

I would happily return the plastic boxes to SIG for a core deposit that I could put towards my own P226 Tacops. They could ship mine in a brown paper bag!!

Enjoy your Tacops and be sure to post pics (including the box) and range report.

I don't this it would bother me much either. My Sigs haven't seen the inside of their cases since I brought them home for the first time.

I would also like to see some pics of the box that it came in though.

Up until the end of 2010 S&W shipped their revolvers in a plastic box similar to SIGS. In early 2011 S&W dropped the price on some of their revolvers (especially j frames) by $100 and stated shipping in cardboard boxes.

When I spoke to Sig Sauer customer service on the issue, I did ask if I would get a price reduction or a discount for the change of a hard black plastic case versus the cardboard box. Guess what the response was? A emphatic "NO Way"! They are making money hand over fist since they can't keep up with demand. Evident by dealers being out of stock constantly on more than just a few models. They're giving the consumer less for a price increasing product (over the past two years). This experience just put the pronunciation of Sig Sauer to be remembered as Sig Sour in my mouth. All in all, I do like the firearm though. Just a very poor PR response for the situation. I am just providing a heads up for future Sig consumers on what to expect going forward.
I expected what was written on their web-site prior to and during my purchase.

I just purchased a P238 with a date of 09-APR-2012.

It came in a black plastic box with gray latches. The Sig gun band was silver with black printing. Included was a right hand holster, one 6rd mag, small tube of Mil-Comm TW25B lubricant, a lock under the foam. inspection tag, Sig owners manual, NRA application, and the P238 in a plastic bag.
