One Spot For: Sig P239 Info. Years Produced, Serial #’s, Variations, Etc.

Last Updated 07/18/2020

I have started this post so that there can be a single spot within “Sig Talk” that I hope would grow to contain ALL available manufacturing information about the P239 pistol.

The information contained here is BELIEVED to be accurate. If you have additional information to add, or if you know of information presented that is not correct, please provide updates.

Caveat: If you supply information to this thread, please-please provide where/how you obtained your information. In-other-words, do not just stated something as a fact. Provide in your comment how you know this to be true.

Examples: “In a call to Sig Sauer, they said xxxxx.” “The box my P239 came from the manufacturer and said xxxxx.” “I worked at Sig and xxxxx.”

Here is my input to date. If any information is wrong, respond to this thread. I only know what I have been told…… I will go back and continually change details as more info is received, or if details here are found to NOT be correct.

Note: Some of the serial numbers below appear out of order. This indicates that one or more of the dates provided are not correct. These discrepancies can only be resolved as more serial numbers are entered..........

P239 Details
1) P239 was discontinued for 2018.
2) For Sig pistols manufactured before 2005, Sig can only provide month/year of manufacture by serial number. No variation details, etc.
3) P239’s produced before 2005 were manufactured in Germany
4) About 2005 Sig started producing some frames in US.
5) P239 Germany 9mm serial numbers started with SA…….
6) P239 Germany 40 & 357 serial numbers started with SA4…….
7) US produced frames started with SBU…….. (Sig Arms US)
8) Sometime post import ban, P239 production became entirely US based & serial numbers started with 56A…..
9) P239 was never manufactured in K-Kote*
10) P239 SKU numbers consist of Model#-caliber-Finish[Night Sites Noted]. Examples:
239-9-B = P239, 9mm, Nitrite
239-9-BSS = P239, 9mm, Nitrite Sig (Night) Sights
11) Gen 1 = Double Action Kellerman (DAK) began production about 2004. [Only noted as Gen 1 after Gen 2 SAS came out. Different than Double Action Only (DAO)]
12) Gen 2 = DA/SA
13) Double Action Only (DAO) produced both before & after 2004
14) P239 has been manufactured in 9mm, 40 caliber, & Sig 357
15) Factory 8 round mags for 9mm, 7 round mags for 40 & 357 Sig
16) Sig Anti-Snag (SAS)
17) Scorpion (SCPN), Flat Earth Finish pistol w/SRT & Hogue G10 FDE Grips, DA/SA
18) Short Reset Trigger (SRT)

** Some submissions I have not entered into this list. If you are not reasonably sure of the manufacture date, I have left your gun off. I understand that you can make a judgement based upon other P239’s on the list. But I want only positive dates to add so that the is not mistakes if possible….. Thanks!

Gen 1 was DAK not DAO. I recall some DAOs were made pre DAK. Also...Gen 1s were not called that until Gen 2 SAS came out.

SIG did not change the numbering system in 2005. Around that time they started producing some US framed P239’s. These serials were SBUxxxxx. I believe this prefix was a change to SIG Germany’s serials (SAxxxxx) so SA became SB and add a U for US made so SBU. After the import ban, P239 production was entirely in the US. SIG USA again changed the serial number prefix to 56A. There were German produced P239 frames (SA and SA4) up til the import ban.

German framed P239’s in 9mm have serial numbers that start in SA. The German .40 S&W and .357 SIG guns have serials that start with SA4. The only difference in the frames are the magwell dimensions.
