Saw a P6 dated 79 that's up for trade.
Are they worth having?
Wold you have one for carry?

Great pistol, but designed for FMJ ammo. Mine functions flawless, until I try to feed it JHP. Fun at the range, but mine is not on the carry list. $400 at a gun show a few years ago.

Best option is to get a P225 barrel, but they're impossible to find. You can polish the feed ramp, or have the angle re-cut, too.

I think the P225/P6 is amazing. I've got 3, and may get another. If the price is right, you should get it.

I'd carry mine, but mine has a P225 barrel.

Definitely worth having. I've got several P6/old P225.

The JHP thing is a consideration. But some pre-99 guns may shoot JHP's if it's a concern. But they weren't designed to. There are options beside traditional JHP like these:

Guard Dog EFmJ from Federal.

Of course good idea or bad. Some folks do carry fmj.

I love these guns and would have no problem carrying 1. Triggers on P6's are sucky though. I'm no trigger snob. But they are not good.

I hev a P6 dated 11/82 and it feeds JHP'S just fine. Yes it's in my EDC lineup. I get tighter groups with it than anything else I own.

I had some reservations about it when I bought it but, was very pleasantly surprised. I have done NO mods to it, lots of others on various boards have changed out the trigger spring for a lighter pull but I have left mine alone. Have the replacement spring but never installed it.

I think you will in time grow to like it a lot and, as others have said when you can find a 225 replacement barrel you will like it even more. For a thirty+ year old pistol they are rock solid.

Just for your information, the below are pictures of my '78 P6 barrel on the left, and '97 P225 barrel.

I used a 5/16" dowel and 400-600 grit wet-or-dry paper to polish the feed ramp which allows me to shoot 147 grain HST ammunition. It takes "time", but in this case...
"Haste makes Waste"!

Heard from the seller today. He stated he shot some Winchester Rangers with no problems. He also stated all numbers matched.
I'm trading my Glock 26. I just can't get used to the size. I shoot my P220's and my Officers model 1911 much better.
This guy is interested as well as another fellow who has a H&K VP9, but only one magazine.
I've attached a pic of the P6.

Here's mine, just a little "older"... 11/78... with some of the "enhancements", obviously the G-10s, but as mentioned E2 style mainspring assembly, and Siglite Tritium sights, and the polished feedramp OEM barrel.

They’re getting expensive now, bit I’d say they are still worth buying. The P6/p225 is one of the finest pistols created by God or man imo. Ergonomically they’re perfect. My ‘80 feeds hollow points just fine, at least what I’ve tried (gold dots 124, 115gr, hornady xtp, cheap winchester 147gr). If it was meant to be a dedicated carry gun, I would replace the hammer spring, sights, and get it refinished. But it is perfectly suitable as is though.

You can also remove material on the right grip so you can use the new trigger bar spring (TBS). I don't recommend doing this because the grip is really thin here. A little too much and you've made a hole in the grip. I just use the old TBS on my P6. I've got G10's on my P225, so it's got the new mainspring assembly and new TBS.

The owner told me he's had it a couple of years, that he got it from a friend whose father had it for years.
I don't know that much about guns, but even though the finish shows a little wear, does the internals look pretty good for its' age? The rifling look good?
I know this is a Sig forum and I'm not trying to start anything, but I also have a guy with a H&K VP9 and one mag he wants to trade me, so I've got a decision to make.

That's understandable, but by the same token, this P6 would be like a "Little Sister" to your P220s. Same manual of arms, same takedown procedure, and it can be made to operate as smooth as your P220s. Shoot a slightly less recoiling round to train a younger generation. The single stack design allows for a slender grip, which is easier to grasp with smaller hands.

From the looks of the photos you posted, the ramp looks "wide" enough, it may need a little polishing, should you get it, and you have feeding problems with some hollowpoints. Normally it depends on the nose profile of the bullet, and in many cases the delivery by the magazine.

One of the many advertising points, I seem to remember, from back in the '80s from Sig, was that you could chamber an empty cartridge case loaded into a magazine, as a measure of reliability.

Even Robert Burke, "The Sig Armorer", still offers the work on P6 barrels, although he also requires action work be included on the work order.

True the VP9 is relatively new pistol as H&K just marketed it within the last few years but it is also a striker fired pistol so if you like striker fired it would be a pretty good deal but remember that Mags and other accessories will probably cost a lot more than those for a P6.

If it were me; which it isn't I would never trade for anything striker fired. Then as I said that is a matter of personal choice.

Well, actually a new H&K magazine isn't that much more than a new (not a ProMag) P6/P225 magazine. I'm not really into lights & lasers so a gun with a rail isn't a selling point.
I've owned several Glocks and the only one I really liked was a G21...I think it was a first or second generation.
Myself, I like a gun with a hammer. If it has a decocting lever thats even better. Right now I'm carrying a STI Spartan III Officers model. It's got a hair trigger & shoots like a dream. Of course my nickel plated W. German P220 is no slouch.

I had the beat-up frame cerakoted semigloss black to match the slide. Now waiting on some Hogues Mascus Green G-10s. I’ll post photos of the finished product when those grips finally arrive.
I'll look forward to seeing those pictures!

What would be the best way to polish the feed ramp? Wet/dry sandpaper or some jewelers rouge on a Dremel?
