I am currently located in Geneva, Switzerland and purchased from a local gun store a SIG Sauer P229 in 9mm.
It is a police trade-in duty pistol with the logo of the Geneva, Switzerland police department engraved on the front of the slide. The gun is used, but in excellent working condition and very well maintained/serviced.
I am very curious to determine approximately when and possibly where this pistol was produced. Other than the serial number, there are no other markings like "Made in Germany" or "Made in W. Germany", etc. The Proof Mark on the barrel is Swiss.
Is it even possible that this is a Swiss made SIG, as it was first issued to a Swiss government agency and not intended for export?
Thank you very much in advance for any feedback/advice you can provide.
A general idea may be gathered by the date code on the grips... yours is about 1200 newer than the one I just picked up which is AH139XX and has grip dates of 2/98, and 3/98, so it can't be before 2/98 unless grips were replaced. This one is in .40 S&W, and has the larger magazine well.
Hello P229 GE, I have a similar P229 9mm, without the Swiss police logo. Mine has an "AE" serial number prefix, which should be circa 1995. If yours has an "AH" prefix I would agree, circa 1998. I have read that the Swiss proofed SIG Sauers are "assembled" in Switzerland. In the case of the P229s of that era, I would take that to mean a German frame, and US milled one piece stainless slide. A very nice pistol in any case, and still one of my favorite SIGs.
Congratulations and welcome to SIGTalk! Very nice P229 and I love the canton coat-of-arms on the slide dust cover.
Since neither the U.S. or Switzerland are members of C.I.P. and there is no hint of any German proof marks on the frame, I am going to speculate that your P229 was made in the U.S. and imported directly by Switzerland, hence the Swiss pressure proof mark on the barrel hood. If your gun had been assembled in Switzerland, I would assume that it would have been marked "Montage Suisse" plus I have only heard of the P229 being made in the U.S. and Germany.
EDIT: Looking more closely (and with my glasses on ) at your second photo, I think I see the German nitro proof mark on its side after the frame serial number so I am revising my statement and say that your P229 was made in Germany and that there are probably 3 proof marks, including a date code (KH or KJ? for '97 or '98), on the slide chin as stoicone suggested.
P229GE first of all welcome from N.C. and I agree with everyone else. You have a fine pistol. The 229 is indeed on of the best that sig has ever made. I have an AL date coded EX/LE CPO in 40 S&W and it will probably be the last pistol I ever sell.
See my avatar, not the greatest pic but you can get an idea of what it looks like.
