P229 Barrel Nicks

I fired the first few rounds through my P229 ASE the other day, and when I went to clean it I noticed some damage on the edge of the top left side of the barrel. I'm not sure if they existed before, but I'm assuming they didn't, because I'm very much a perfectionist when it comes to the condition of my tools...

Here's a photo of the damage. Does this look like normal wear to anyone?

If the slide was causing the nicks, I would expect the nicks to run from back to front.
It looks more like the gun rubbed up to something.

Easiest way to tell if it is wear is to take a black sharpie and cover the nicks. Shoot the gun and check the barrel. Also clean the inside of the slide and look for any burrs on the front edge of the ejection port. If present, a fine line small file can be used to remove them but work slow and do not remove more then the burr.

I suspect the cause is other then wear.

When a SIG slide moves back in recoil, the top of the barrel hood rubs against the underside of the slide. To help prevent scratches and wear, I first make sure the underside of the slide has no rough spots. Those are smoothed with wet dry paper wrapped on the end of a stick (starting with 220 or 320 and finishing with 500 to 600 grit)

The actual lock up between the barrel hood front edge and the front of the ejection port, so smoothing the inside of the slide has no affect on function.

Best way to determine were smoothing is needed is to put "paint" the suspect areas of the slide with DyKem, then work the action a few times. Alternatively, wipe all oil and grease off the inside of the slide and with gun assembled, put a thin layer of grease on top of the barrel hood. Lock slide back and field strip to inspect where the grease is on the underside of the slide.

P938's get a characteristic lateral wear line on the top of the barrel hood. This is caused be the sharp edge of a milled recessed area just behind the slide muzzle. There is no functional reason for this to be a sharp edge, so I break (slightly round) that edge and smooth as with most all SIGs.

When assembling the gun, grease the barrel hood as well as the usual spots (barrel and lug). After assembly, simply wipe all grease from the exposed area of the barrel hood.

All the above results in no more scratches and wear.

Thanks for the detailed response Bumper. Although it doesn't look like a sliding action caused this, it looks more like an impact, but I'm no expert. Anyway, I'll check the slide for rough spots and smooth them if I find any, shoot again and see if it looks any different.
