Question on slide interchangeability in P229 models

Question 1: Will a slide from a P229 357 SIG caliber 3.9" bbl. DAO fit and function in a SA/DA P229 SAS?

Question 2: If so, then will a Sig .22 conversion kit for a P229 fit onto the DAO frame and function properly?

I kind of have a feeling it won't work...I know that Sig will convert DAK and DAO to SA/DA, but at the price I'd pay for this pistol it isn't economically feasible to put another $255 into sending it to them for that conversion.

1) It depends. On what 229 the slide came from and what 229 you want to put it on, but I do not believe that the trigger has any impact on this. As you mentioned, the trigger can be converted and modifying the slide is not necessary as far as I know.

Is the SA/DA 229 SAS a .40? If so, the only thing you need to switch to .357 SIG is the proper barrel; the outer dimensions of the two and the mags are the same.

There are other issues, such as the caliber of the target gun. I went thru this with my two 229s, which both have "Legacy" slides, one 9mm and one .40. The 9mm slide from the older 228/229 era frame would go on the newer .40 frame - although I did not shoot it to see if it would function that way. But the .40 slide would not go on the older 228/229 frame unless I swapped the locking insert too. Once the locking insert was swapped, then the .40 slide would function properly on the older 228/229 frame.

In short, there are some variables and I am not familiar with all the possible differences that the SAS model may have (I was under the impression that the main diffs are the rounding of the edges on the slide and maybe frame - I do have a 224 SAS but I don't have a non-SAS 224 to compare it to).

2) There are several different .22 conversion kits for 229s. You have to get the right one for your era of 229 for it to work, but again, I don't think the trigger variation makes a difference, but rather what frame and possibly the slide you have.

The Heretic is pretty much spot on.

Question 1, the slide will function on the frame rails. The barrel itself will depend on the Locking Insert, the early 9mm Locking Insert will only work on the P228/P229 barrels, the later Locking Insert for the P229-1 9mm barrel, and all .357 Sig/.40 S&W barrels will interchange. And of course barrels are fitted to the appropriate slide, as the P229-1 barrel's chamber/lug area is a duplicate of the .357 Sig/.40 S&W barrel, but it's "tubular" portion is smaller in diameter, that's why "conversion" barrels are needed.

Question 2, is all about railed or non-railed frames, for the rimfire slides. Action type has no bearing, and you can actually add the SAO to the list also, since it appears they have came out with the SAO Legion P229 model.

Would you all agree?

The type of trigger mechanism (DA/SA, DAO, DAK, SAO) that a classic P-series pistol frame is equipped with has NO bearing on whether any particular slide will or will not fit on it.

Thanks for the information.

The P229-1 SAS gen 2 is 9mm with 3.9" barrel. I already have the Sig .22 conversion kit which fits on both my 1991 P228 and 2017 P229-1 SAS and functions without issues.

What I was trying to do was find a pistol in .357 Sig where I could take the slide and put it on my 229-1 and also use the frame with my .22 conversion slide.

The 357 SIG frame will work with either of these slides you mention. May require a locking insert swap, but that would be it.

I would first confirm that the 229-1 SAS frame is equipped with the "40/357" inscribed locking insert. Should be stamped on the underside of the LI, something like this:

I don't have enough experience with or knowledge of the different SIGs to say for sure, but that would be my assumption yes.

I didn't look at or notice anything on the underside, but my P229-40-T does have a '40' stamped on the top of it.
