Why is the 228 sought after?

Seems everyone is looking for them and pay bigger dollar for them. They are nice and point&shoot well . It makes a fine ccw pistol. W-german or german bring more money and non-rail is prefered over the USA railed 228's. Nice ones in our area bring $650 real nice-$1000 NIB W-German tripple ser.##.

Because the P228 is so awesome! A nice German/W. German example would have most likely have no MIM parts and come with a factory test target.

possibly the best sig ever made.

if you get a chance, hold a 228 & 229/9, you'll notice that the 229 with the stainless slide, is nose heavy & why the 228 has better balance.

i've got a ka/'90, with original box & test target with matching s/n's & proof marks on frame/slide/barrel & box

newer versions would see rails & non-rail.

many to choose from, i'll stick with the classic.

Wideners have a few used imported P228, which I think means that they are German, and they are selling them for 465. Not sure if that is a good price or not.

Bearone2, I picked up one identical to that at a gun show here about a year ago. It was exactly what I wanted, but I was still able to get the guy to come down some from his asking price. Even if he hadn't, I wasn't leaving that show without it.

th3ug1y0n3:
depends on condition & if they throw in shipping & what receiving ffl charges if $465 is a good price.

pa28fdo:
what'd you pay for it, confirm it had original box & tt?

I have heard that the ones from Wideners vary in condition. Here is their description below. The one in the picture is probably one of the better ones. Having said that they ARE P228s. If you are looking for a shooter, and not a collection P228, they seem to be pretty good values.

"The pistol are in good shape and show normal to heavy holster wear on the bluing of the gun. These guns are used military/police. They are SIGs. Nuff said."

Bearone2, We started over 8 and I worked him down to 7.5. Still high, but it was nib, unfired and yes, it had the original box, 2 mags, tt & manual. This one, I keep.

I've been considering getting a CPO 228, but have always been leary of buying used guns, particularly buying them online. Are CPO SIGs usually good?

Usually given a once over by SiG and given a warranty...refinished if it needs it...can be a bargain...

+1

i got a 220 cpo a while back that had been issued to a le department, was never issued, returned to sig with other firearms from the agency & a week later was a red box cpo.

all dates were provided by sig cs.

the date on the red box is the date it became a cpo, not the date it was mfg.

pa28fdo:
it is a keeper. what's the date on the chin of the slide?

Yes. I've just ordered my second one. But CPOs don't come with original box or test target, FYI.

Be careful when buying any Sig CPO. They only label them as "Excellent Condition" and it's purely marketing. I've bought several and have seen a lot more. Some are ok and some are not all that great. Sig definitely overstates the effort they put into preparing them for resale. To correct some of the info above, Sig does not refinish slides on CPO guns. They replace springs, sights, parts that are obviously worn, and may replace the grips. That's it.

Never give more than $575 for a P228 CPO. Dealers get these for a very low price.

As some have stated, the Classic P228s are likely the best producton handgun yet made. The folded carbon slides offer perfect balancing and the size of the overall weapon is a perfect compromise between the advantages of a large gun and the concealability of a small one. Mec-Gar's 15 round mags make this a perfect carry choice. You can buy a superior hand-made gun but there hasn't yet been a better production line weapon. The P228 is the closest thing to perfect we've yet seen. It's part of why I chose to collect them and currently own 34, made between 1989 and 1997.
