School me on the "long" extractor

Hey All,
Can someone educate me as to what the new "long" extractor is all about?
Is that going to be standard on all new models?

The new P224 will have one?
The newer 1911 have them?

How will you remove for cleaning?

My new P220 Compact has the external extractor, but is shorter and can be removed easily....I cannot see how the long extractor will be removed....

What is the benefit of the long extractor?

So many questions....

I don't know if there is any truth or not to this but I heave read that some are speculating that the move to the longer extractor was at least in part because they are MIM now and need to be longer to be reliable and function correctly. Nothing wrong with MIM if it the part works well. Myself though I am having a hard time getting used to the looks of the longer extractor even though most pistols these days from most manufatures come with them.

Some have also mentioned that a longer extractor might be less prone to damage than a short extractor if someone slams the slide on a round inserted manually into the chamber.

Then it is also possible that a longer extractor simply looks beefier which a potential customer may think is better/stronger and most of the competition uses the longer extractors such as HK.

Interesting that Glocks seem to have had more then a few issues with their MIM extractors being the short extractor design. Not failing but reports of ejecting to the face, poor ejecting, etc.

it's not that bad on all black finish, but it doesn't look good on a stainless slide.

The looks will probably grow on us (I remember thinking how hideous Glocks were, for the first two decades or so....until I got used to them!), but I am wondering if anyone has any insight as to how they come out for cleaning?

Does it require a more detailed field stripping of slide internals, because I do not see any way to "pop" one out.....?

From what I've read about the long extractor, quite a few did not like it, maybe there were issues with some of the early guns when they switched to it. From what I have seen now through several youtube videos is that everyone with it, seem to really enjoy their gun. My favorite video on the new style p229 is from basshead87. I was looking for his video and looks like he had to create a new account as of an hour ago. Looks like he has a new account called mrgunsngear and is working on uploading his videos from the other account. I'd suggest watching his p229 video. He talks a bit about the long extractor and says he has no issues with it. You can see from his shooting that is the case.
