I took the meat of a discussion on another forum and saved it to my computer for historical reference.
This is an extremely important find, as it basically put Sig Sauer on the map in the US.
If you should ever run across one of these (which is unlikely) you will know what you are looking at. Or call me, please.
This pistol is from the XM10 pistol trials.
A couple of things that jump out at me are: 1) The serial number is one digit off what is normally accepted for that group of pistols according to the "experts" and, 2) the straight frame rails on the P226. The first P226 I ever owned (not a SD) came with straight frame rails, which were subsequently changed to the "scalloped" type.

I live in Saco Maine where these were built at 'Saco Defense' (Now General Dynamics) and my Dad was head of finance for the company during the US Army Trials. According to him after the trial was over there were somewhere around 20 pistols out the of the 50 made given back to Saco Defense and were to be sold within the company as an 'Incentive' of the employees for their hard work on this pistol. His good friend Greg, who is a family friend, was able to purchase one for $200 with no taxes. Just to add something on the US Army Trials and how corrupted it was, Greg and several other employees of Saco Defense were given Beretta 92s for free from a Beretta Rep that they met at the trials. Greg said the rep even offered money for information on the Sig pistol, needless to say word got out and the rep was 'fired' for doing so. Greg still owns the Beretta and the Sig 226, he doesnt plan on selling them.
