My buddy is a German Shepherd/Great Dane mix named Taz. Got him when he was 2-3 years old, and now I think he's about 8 or 9 years old. He may LOOK and SOUND intimidating, but he is literally the nicest dog I've ever known (Been around dogs pretty much my entire life). In the years that he's been with me, he has literally never tried to bite ANYONE. Not even the cat! Even so, I do think he'd defend our home from any intruder. At the very least, he WILL bark... and it's quite a loud bark.
Unfortunately, he's getting up there in years... Past several months it seems to be getting harder for him to stand up, but he still acts like himself. I'm definitely not looking forward to the stuff that comes next.

My Katie, Border Collie mix, will bark when anyone is near the house or she hears something. I'm not sure how she would react if someone actually broke in. She might just roll over for a tummy rub.

Wilson, our killer Dachshund, is always first on the scene. Unfortunately for defense purposes, he is pretty useless. More interested in licking any and all people to death than anything else. The good news is he makes such a ruckus doing so that I am still alerted to anyone's presence.

No worries of any lawsuits...unless the victim is alergic to dog slobber.

Our chocolate Lab would pull at an intruder's sleeve to remind him there's a flat panel TV in the basement...

Our 90 lb German Shepherd/Belgian Malinois mix that we rescued from the SPCA sleeps downstairs on the first floor and goes apeshit if she hears a hint of trouble.

They'd have to get past her to get to my family on the second floor, but by then the grips on my 226 would already be warm.

There is no better security system, IMO, since she will not only alert me to danger but also lay down her life engaging it. Plus, my kids can't cuddle with a box and wires.

A 90 lb Black Lab who would tear an arm off easily and a 100 lb Collie who isnt much of a defensive dog but has one of the loudest barks I have ever heard on a dog. In a matter of seconds whoever that person was would be staring down the barrel of my 9mm 2022.

Hi Guys/Gals, new here and first post. This dog defense thread really resonates with me. My first dog, Yellow Lab was the best companion and deterrent anyone could wish for. She had a "sixth sense" knowing which strangers meant no harm and which ones were not so good. Two stories: 1) when my wife was pregnant with our first, our dog became "her" dog and followed my wife everywhere. If ANY male stranger would come close, she would growl and show her teeth. This was so atypical for her and we surmised that she knew my wife was pregnant and was instintively defending a member of her pack. Amazing. 2) 2am, spring several years back. Awoken by her frantic barking. This NEVER happens. I go down to see what was going on, she was at the french doors, hair standing on end, barking at our porch. I went out to see what was going on, but only saw the footprints in the grass/dew of someone who clearly walked up to our door, God only knows for what reason. Called the cops and sure enough there had been a string of break-ins in my neighbor hood that week. Alas, this great friend and companion passed several years back, we have a new dog and she is great as well. Dog and firearms in my opinion are the best self defense you can have! I will never be without both. Cheers!

we don't have a dog, but the cat has managed to wake me when somthing was going on outside. he will start clawing my back. first couple times i thought he was just playing but it dawned that there were noises from the courtyard. sometime arguing sometimes loud music. I don't rely on it. i rely on the deadbolt holding enough for me to get my hand around the grip

I wish MY cat was like that. The only time my cat lets me get near her is when I come bearing gifts of food.
