Lightbulb stripping the p290rs

I do not have the finger strength to hold the slide in the position that will allow me to push out the lever to remove the slide. I would like to know opinions about my solution to this problem.

This is what worked. Out of a small piece of pine wood that is 7/8" thick, 1 and 3/4" wide and 2" long, I cut out a notch on the long side that is 5/8" deep and 9/16" wide. The wood now sort of looks like a flattened letter U.

With the magazine removed, I locked the slide back. Then, I placed the U shaped piece of wood upside down on the rails in front of the slide. The barrel fits into the notch with some clearance above the barrel. By slowly releasing the slide, it moves forward until it can go no further because the flare of the barrel will not fit into the notch. The slide is stopped just at the right position to push out the lever. The slide position depends very much on the thickness of the wood and width of the notch. Once the lever is removed, I pulled back on the slide to let the piece of wood fall off and allow the slide to move all the way forward to remove it.

After completing maintenance, I do the same thing to position the slide in just the right place to easily insert the lever.

Since normally the slide pushes against the flare of the barrel anyway, can I do any damage by insertion of a piece of wood to block the slide from moving all the way forward?
