Personally I doubt a SS rod is important but certainly okay if you want to change. If the polymer guide rod is subject to unusual wear so then are the frame rails. The polymer rods were apparently good enough for the following, unless they switched to SS:

In December of 2004 the U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command at the Rock Island Arsenal awarded SIG SAUER a contract for 5,000 SIG SAUER SP2022 pistols chambered in 9mm. <unquote>

The weapon is also used by some state police departments and budget minded law enforcement agencies.

<quote>
The Colombian National Police purchased several thousand SP2009 pistols. A quantity of 55,890 SP2022 pistols was also purchased recently.

France: In 2003, French law enforcement and internal security agencies (including the National Gendarmerie, National Police and French Customs) adopted the model SP 2022 in 9x19mm Parabellum to replace the PAMAS and several other pistols in service. Over 250,000 of the SP 2022 were acquired in what would be the largest single order for service handguns since World War II.

Malaysia: Estimated some 2,000 SP2022 pistols were purchased by Royal Malaysia Police for use by special elite units.

Portugal: SIG Pro SP 2022 is used by the Republican National Guard and Public Security Police.

Switzerland: The SIG Pro is used by the Swiss Military Police (as the Pistole 03).

Looking at this ss guide rod for a P226 Elite,
Sig Sauer P226r Elite 9mm Guide Rod - Stainless Steel Guide Rods
It says it will only fit in a 226 Elite. I was not aware that there were different guide rods for certain 226 models. Is this correct?

Oh, please .

I put a few thousand rounds through my SigPro sp2022 .40 S&W over the course of the 7 years I owned it and the plastic guide rod showed absolutely no signs of wear.

My M11-S1 came with a metal/SS guide rod. It has a black protective finish over metal, whether that's SS or not?
