P229 .40 Cal

This is a discussion on P229 .40 Cal within the SIG Sauer Pistols forums, part of the SIG Sauer Forum category; I just purchased a Sig Sauer P220 .40 cal. Am I able to switch barrels to .357 and 9mm on the 229?...

It's a easy barrel swap between the 40 and 357. You need a Sig Sauer exchange upper kit for $289.00 for the 9mm.

I have and shoot a 229-40-9mm.
There are two ways to do it. Sig has conversion slides. Sig says the slide does not fit older guns and my 229 is a mid 90s.
For about 215.00 you can get a Bar-sto conversion barrel. I recommend thru top gun.
The magazines feed all three caliburs just fine. It shot about 95% so I got a 9mm recoil spring. That brought it up to 100% in 40 or 9mm.
I highly recommend doing the conversion. It gave me twice the gun for 1/3 the price.
There are about 3 companies making conversion barrels. I choose bar-sto bacause of reputation and a guarentee that they would adjust it if necessary. Once in awhile it doesn't fit as it should.

OK...I'm a little slow. I have a 229 .40sw that's about 15 years old. Is this only a barrel swap? I'm most interested in .357.

If so, where to get the barrel?

I like Top gun. They have done me square each time.
The 40 and 357 are close enough all you need is a conversion barrel. The recoil spring and magazines are fine.
Just google conversion barrel and you will find at least 3 makers.
I think highly of Bar-sto.
Sig put out a lot of packages where the gun was sold with both barrels. Plenty of guys don't shoot 357 because of the cost. Google should pop up the forum classifieds, but you could troll them also for used. I know I had a 226 that way and would have sold the barrel anytime. Stick a WTB ad in maybe.
I found my Bar-sto 9mm to be very accurate. It is the next thing to a match barrel.

Sig told me new slide are iffy on fitting old frames. Maybe will but not advised.
If you go 9mm, get a recoil spring to make it hum right. I got a guide with it and just drop it in with the barrel. The 40 mags feed 9mm just fine.

Did you find the Bar-sto barrel to be a drop in or did it require some "smithing" to get the proper fit up?

Mine dropped in and I couldn't ask for better. Both Bar-sto and Top gun have a system for fitting, but they don't consider it a defect so there is a charge. They told me any local gunsmith could do it.
Best gun decision I ever made maybe. Gotta shoot about 40 boxes to make it pay off. Thats a cross I'm willing to bear.
