I am currently debating whether or not to buy a P228 that's available. My plan for it would be for a carry gun and occasional shooter. I currently have P229s in 9mm that would see the bulk of my training/practice rounds, and the P228 would get shot some, but not a lot.
My concern is that P228 parts, particularly the extractor, seem to be almost impossible to get any more. I know that Total Automation has made aftermarket extractors in the past, but I don't know how reliable of a source they will be going forward. I'm uncomfortable picking up an orphan where such a critical part (and a 20,000 round part according to the armorers' manual IRRC) will be unobtainium going forward, but wanted to see the experts' thoughts and/or if there are other sources I'm not aware of.
Also, are there any more parts that would need replacement as part of PM that are difficult to obtain that I'm not aware of? I know the breech block is hard to find, but that will pretty much last the life of the gun, right?
Finally, how is the P228 recoil vs. the P229? Does the lighter slide reduce it at all? I've never shot a P228...
Thanks in advance!
