229 magazine ID help needed

I just got 8 229 magazines (for $60.00) from I guy I've done 'business' with in the past. There is no indication as to the caliber of the magazines stamped anywhere on them.

On the front is stamped:

J.P. Sauer & Sons GmbH Germany 091494 SIGARMS, INC. Exeter, NH

Underneath is stamped:

RESTRICTED LAW ENFORCEMENT/GOV'T USE ONLY

On the side of the magazine is the SIG SAUER 'angled' stamping.

I can load both .40 S&W and 9mm cartridges into the magazines, but do not quite have the courage to rack any into the barrel.

They are all the 'older' German 'zipper-back' style.

Thanks, in advance for any help that might be offered.

Camera's in the shop for repairs, or I would have just taken some pictures.

bblr: Thanks for the reply, although I'm not too sure what 'steps' are. There is a 3/4" x 3/8" (appx) indentation just above the magazine base plate, but I thought was a mag removal assist function.

There does not appear to be a decrease in width in the mag.

I should have just waited for the camera to be returned, duh!

I have compared the magazines in question with a Sig 229 9mm mag and there does not appear (to this novices eye) that there is any discernable difference in the shape of the magazines.

Schooling me for sure, thank you...they are Dovetailed (I incorrectly referred to them as Zipperbacks), nice pic wgsigs!

They are all 13 round magazines. There is no 'step', now that I know what 'steps' are, nice pic, bblr!

I could easily load 13 rounds on 9mm into them, but could not load more than 8 .40 S&W into them.

Leading me the believe they are 9mm magazines, without the step.

Good stuff, men.
