ok here is the situation. my unit is currently deployed and we have a tradition of purchasing a pistol engraved with our eod badge and something about the unit. our last deployment the guy organizing it got us all para double stack 1911s. i didnt really care much for it and ended up giving it to one of my soldiers who had never owned a gun and didnt have the money to participate in the purchase. figured it would be put to much better use that way. most of us that purchased them were unhappy with the guns after getting them. so to prevent another snafu on the tradition, i took over the organization and steered everyone toward sigs. conveniently, sig has a program already in place just for this purpose. many of the guys either plan to use this pistol for self defense or cc. some im sure will put it in a case and look at it. a travesty in my opinion. everyone has come to the conclusion that they dont know exactly what they want. we managed to weed it down to 226 (.40) 229 (40) 220 (.45) and 1911 base model (.45). no one is really pushing for a specific one and i have the small problem of wanting them all...so here i am asking for opinions/advice/input of whatever kind to see what sig people think. i own a 229 in 9mm and have shot the m11 (228) and 226. after a trigger job im pretty darn happy with my 229. i must say i am curious about the 1911s. anyone have any experience with them? remember we have to pick JUST ONE pistol....

I certainly can't choose for you but I would simply choose based on the intended purpose of the gun. You say many of the guys will use the pistol for CC or self defense so I would make my choice based on that. All the guns would be great for self defense, all of them can be used as CC but all of them are full sized pistols except the 229 which as you know has about a half inch chopped off the barrel. Out of all of them the 229 is most concealable just because of it's size. All would be excellent choices and sure to please.

P.S. EOD is badass!

I would opt for the 1911. It's a Sig and a tribute to John Brownings 1911. Put that together with your service in the military and it's perfect. I've seen some other 1911's done with unit insignia and they look awesome. Many thanks for you service and stay safe.

I totally agree - I have shot dozens of different 1911 variants and I have not shot a factory 1911 that I like better than SIGS!!!

I would opt for either the P220 or the 1911. I have a P220 and its great. I don't have a SIG 1911 but I have read many good things about it.

I'd vote for the 220. There are different variations, so you don't have to go full size if you aren't looking for one that large.

I presumed OP meant a full size 220. If any 220 is an option, then I'd definitely vote for a 220 Compact. But again, it's all about what'll make you guys most satisfied. The 1911 is my all time favorite pistol design so I'm partial to that too, but it's bulky for a cc.

I'm with Semperfink on this one. If many of you are going to keep them for CC, then I'd do the 229 unless a compact 220 is being considered.

I agree with Hud35500 go with SIG's Commander size 1911. I think it is a perfect choice to continue your unit's tradition with. Thanks you for your service .

thanks for all the input you guys...as far as the 1911 goes on the program list it says 1911 basic model finished in stainless or nitron so i dont know if we can even get the commander sized one. i guess ill have to ask the representative when i call.

Sig's CS is really top notch these days, at least from my experience with them. I'd bet they would be very willing to help your unit out.

Commander size! I learn somethin I love about SIG more every day! I like the look of that shorter barrel 1911. I'd say that's a viable option for a CC too!

Broken record here, but, I'm also going to say either the 220 or the 1911.
