Swapping p229 slide for 228?

I have a 40 cal p229, and have a p228 9mm slide and parts otw. What is involved in swapping it? I heard it is more than just a slide swap. I did get two 9mm p226-1 mags.
Thanks!

You also have to swap in the P228 locking insert.

You need to install a 9MM locking block in your P229 40 frame and then it will fit. I know from dealing with this in the past.

The P229 and P228 share the same grips. I got me a set of P228 wooden grips for my P229. Had to remove some material on the right grip though because the triggerbar spring was binding, preventing the trigger to reset. Besides that I needed P239 grip screws to accommodate the thicker wood grips. With the stock plastic grip panel should be no problem. The M11-A1 sports P228 grips.

Does that then make the frame incapable of using the 40 slide as in proper function?

It looks easy enough to swap the block back.

Yes you have to switch the blocks in and out. The block can be a little tricky the first time but after a couple of times it takes less then a minute to switch them out. In addition to the spring (most 228 slides come with it) I recommend 9mm mags too if you want perfect feeding. I have a 229 FrankenSig with 40Cal/357Sig barrels and a P228 slide with a threaded barrel I shoot suppressed. Think I have a picture on here some where. Ah found it.

Yes. You have to have the matching locking inserts for the slide/barrel assemblies to work properly - P228 locking insert for P228 slide/barrel and .40 locking block for .40 slide/barrel.

Not what you asked and not to confuse things, but a P229-1 9mm barrel and slide will work with a .40 locking insert, however.

Actually, glad you mentioned it because I have an extra M11A-1 slide/barrel sitting around and 40 P229s used are considerably cheaper than 9MM versions.

I would like to just find a 9MM frame but alas not an easy task

With the FBI and LEO's across the country downsizing from 40 to 9, and then the follow on civilian shift, there must be good reason - and there is! If 9 is better than 40, then .22lr is better still, and so the very best must be the venerable BB! Less expensive to shoot, far higher magazine capacity, it's the ultimate weapon! So instead of wasting time swapping to 9mm, grab this horn by the bulls and go right to the very best with:

"Bumper's BB Conversion Slide for the P-Series". Offering a magazine capacity of over 200 rounds, select fire for full auto that's legal with no tax stamp, and a blazing muzzle velocity of almost 200 fps, you will be the envy of all your friends! At the range, they'll just stare in slack jawed wonder as you pulverize your target and theirs too! Just imagine yourself chasing the neighborhood bully down the street, "Ow, ouch, stoppit, ow, ouch, please stop, ow!" as a veritable swarm of pellets stings his sorry butt!! Send $995, cash, check, or money order today!
